Minoxidil is an FDA approved medicinal treatment for male and female pattern baldness, and is the active ingredient in products such as Regaine & ReGen Saks. Minoxidil is only a suitable treatment for men and women that are suffering from Genetic Hair Loss, otherwise known as Androgenetic Alopecia.
Minoxidil was first used as a treatment for hypertension, in a tablet form. The side effect of a hair loss treatment was noted during clinic trials, and so a lotion was developed to deliver Minoxidil directly to the scalp. Minoxidil is a vasodilator, which means that it works by relaxing blood vessels and allowing for a better blood flow to the areas. The exact reasons for why Minoxidil works as a hair loss treatment are not fully understood yet. What is shown is that Minoxidil improves the function of hair follicles.
Results are not immediate and will take 3-4 months for the first results to start to show. Full results will take 12-18 months to be seen. Minoxidil must be used continually to keep the results from the treatment. Ceasing the treatment will cause your hair loss pattern to follow.
One year-long study of male Regaine users found Minoxidil to be ver effective in 15.9% and effective in 47.8% of patients for stimulating hair growth.
