Obesity is a common issue in the UK with one in every 4 adults in the UK now classed as obese. The usual measure used for Obesity as having a Body Mass Index(BMI) of over 30, however the BMI scale isn’t used as a diagnosis for Obesity. BMI is calculated using your height, age and weight.
For the majority of adults, a BMI of:
- 18.5 to 24.9 means you’re a healthy weight
- 25 to 29.9 means you’re overweight
- 30 to 39.9 means you’re obese
- 40 or above means you’re severely obese
Another measure used for Obesity is waist circumference. In general, men with a waist circumference of 37in (94cm) or more and women with a waist circumference of 31.5in (80cm) or more are at a greater risk of developing obesity-related health issues.
Generally, men with a waist circumference of 94cm (37in) or more and women with a waist circumference of 80cm (about 31.5in) or more are more likely to develop obesity-related health problems
Risks of Obesity
Obesity can lead to a number of greater physical challenges during regular life, but also has the added risk of causing potentially life-threatening conditions over time. The most common serious conditions caused by obesity are:
- Coronary Heart Disease
- Cancer, such as bowel cancer and breast cancer
- Type 2 Diabetes
The psychological effects of obesity can often be overlooked, but are equally as serious as the physical conditions that obesity can cause.
The day-to-day issues that obesity can cause are:
- Difficulty and breathlessness doing physical activity
- Excessive sweating
- Back and joint pain
- The feeling of tiredness more often
Causes of Obesity
Obesity is most commonly caused by a consistent high calorie diet, full of sugars and fats. Your body uses sugars and fats as an energy source, so when you combine a high calorie diet with a low exercise plan, the body continues to store these excess sugars and fats.
In today’s society, it is very common for you to have a lack of exercise during work hours due to the high numbers of sedentary, office jobs. This means on average we need fewer calories than previous generations may have needed for more labour intensive jobs. This makes it easy to take in more calories than is necessary.
Combine this with cheap food tending to have higher amounts of sugar, fat and calories, it is becoming increasingly easy to have a diet that is too high in calories for your bodies needs.
Obesity can be caused by other underlying medical conditions, such as an underactive thyroid gland. Your thyroid is responsible for producing hormones, which when not produced in the right quantities can cause weight gain. This can be cured by taking daily hormone tablets.
The easiest way to lose weight and control your obesity are to undertake a new calorie-restricted diet, that includes all the vitamins and nutrients necessary for a healthy diet. Alongside that you should add an increased regular exercise plan, such as running, cycling, swimming or fast walking. It is recommended to have on average at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.
On top of that, you may find it easier to stick with your new weight loss plan if you join a local weight loss support group.
