Finasteride is a  prescription only tablet for men to treat male pattern baldness, otherwise known as androgenetic alopecia. Finasteride was first trialled as a treatment for men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) (a swollen prostate gland). This trial found the men taking Finasteride saw the side effect of their genetic hair loss being halted or even reversed. Finasteride is the most effective FDA approved medication to treat male pattern baldness.

Finasteride 5mg tablet is used as a treatment for BPH. This off-label prescription for hair loss is prescribed as half a tablet 3 times per week. 

  • Do not exceed the dosage of a 3 half tablets per week. Consult your doctor if you exceed the daily recommended dosage. Taking more than a quarter of a tablet per day will not lead to better results, but can instead increase the risk of side effects.
  • If you miss your daily dosage, do not double the next day to make up

Finasteride is a medication used to treat male pattern baldness, and is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which means it inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone(DHT). Finasteride has been shown to be an effective treatment for male pattern baldness in 9 out of 10 men. It is not an effective treatment for female pattern baldness.

Results can take up to 12 months to be seen, but some men will see results as early as 3 months. 90% success rate is based on a minimum 12-month treatment length. Cessation of the treatment will lead to hair loss resuming within 12 months.

Instructions / Dosage for Use

  • Each dosage of Finasteride is a half tablet taken 3 times per week.. To cut each tablet into half, please use the pill cutter provided.
  • Do not exceed the dosage of a 3 half tablets per week. Consult your doctor if you exceed the daily recommended dosage. Taking more than a quarter of a tablet per day will not lead to better results, but can instead increase the risk of side effects.
  • If you miss your daily dosage, do not double the next day to make up.

Warning for Use

  • Side effects from Finasteride are rare, and should disappear when the treatment is discontinued. If you suffer any of the following side effects as a result of this treatment, please consult your doctor and the Patient Information Leaflet inside the box. Side effects are seen between 1-10 users in 1000
  • At the conclusion of a 5-year clinical trial, side effects were reported in only 0.3% of men.

Side Effects:

  • Breast tenderness and enlargement
  • Testicular Pain
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Problems gaining an erection or ejaculating
  • A rash
  • Palpitations
  • Depressed mood
  • Women must not take or handle Finasteride, as it has been shown at clinical trial to not be an effective treatment for female pattern baldness.
  • Pregnant, planning to become pregnant and breast-feeding woman must avoid all contact with Finasteride tablets. The medicine may affect the sex organs of baby’s, and any contact with the tablets should be reported immediately to your doctor.
  • Do not take Finasteride if you are already taking Finasteride or Dutasteride to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia(BPH).
