Description

Sildenafil is a prescription only medication that is the generic form of the branded Sildenafil tablet Viagra. Sildenafil is a Phosphodiesterase Type 5 inhibitor (PDE 5), which works by increasing the blood flow to the penis. Sildenafil is a vasodilator, so relaxes the blood vessels around the penis to allow for freer flow of blood to the area. Sildenafil should be taken before engaging in sexual activity, as it will help to achieve and maintain an erection when you are sexually excited or stimulated. Sildenafil is an effective treatment for men suffering from Erectile Dysfunction, when a man struggles to get and/or maintain a hard erection during sexual activity. Sildenafil will only work to help achieve and maintain an erection if you are sexually excited or stimulated after the medication has taken effect.

The effects of Sildenafil can take 30-60 minutes to be seen and the effects will last for around 4-6 hours. The time before effects are seen and length of effects are different from person to person. Sildenafil is available in various strengths of 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. If you have not tried Sildenafil before, it is recommended to try the 25mg strength tablet first.

Sildenafil is the most popular medication available for Erectile Dysfunction, but other available medications may be better suited to your needs. Cialis (Tadafil) has a longer duration of action than other treatments, and can last for up to 36 hours. Levritra (Vardenafil) can last for around 5 hours, and only takes 15 minutes for the effects to be seen. Vardenafil is also a more suitable treatment for people suffering from diabetes.

Instructions / Dosage for Use

Sildenafil should be taken as instructed by your doctor and in accordance with the Patient Information Leaflet provided with the medication. Sildenafil should be taken around an hour before you plan to start any sexual activity, and no more than one tablet should be taken within a 24-hour period.  The Sildenafil tablet should be taken whole, with a glass of water. If you think that the effects of the treatment are either too strong or too weak for your needs, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist about which strength of Sildenafil you would be more suited to. Sildenafil can take anywhere between 30-60 minutes for the effects to be seen, and will vary from person to person. Sildenafil may take longer to treat Erectile Dysfunction is taken with a large meal.

Warning for Use

Sildenafil must not be taken if you are taking any medications called nitrates, as the interaction between the two medications can cause a potentially dangerous decrease in your blood pressure. These medications are most often used to give relief of chest pain (angina pectoris). If you are taking any medications known as nitric oxide donors, such as amyl nitrate (poppers), please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Before taking or purchasing Sildenafil please talk to your doctor if you suffer from or take medication for any of the following:

  • Severe heart or liver problem
  • Recently had a stroke or heart attack
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rare inherited eye diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa
  • Loss of vision because of non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy
  • Sickle cell anaemia
  • Leukaemia
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Deformity of your penis or Peyronies Disease
  • Currently have a stomach ulcer or a bleeding problem, such as haemophilia

Sildenafil should not be taken in conjunction with any other oral or local treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Sildenafil should never be taken or given to anyone under the age of 18.
